6 Important Tips for Maintaining Commercial Floor Coatings

The condition of your floors means a great deal in terms of the operation of your facility:
  • Clean floors are an excellent reflection of the quality of the business conducted there even if people don’t always notice floors unless they are in poor condition.
  • Keeping the integrity of your floors high – i.e. damage-free – enhances the safety of the environment for all who work, visit or live there.
  • Functional floor coatings are designed for specific purposes. Maintaining them according to manufacturers’ instructions will make them last longer and perform optimally.
  • Your floors represent a significant investment. Stick to a firm maintenance schedule for longevity and durability.
How to protect your investment
Coated floors look superb when they are first installed and there’s no reason why they can’t continue to provide the same service for many years to come. Here are six ways you can ensure your facility’s functional floor coatings continue to provide a healthy return on investment, even when faced with heavy daily use.
  1. Daily/regular care – Coated floors should be swept daily. Large spaces benefit from mechanised sweeping equipment, but a broom for smaller areas is adequate. Scrubbing with appropriate detergents and brushes should be carried out on a regular basis. The frequency will depend upon the setting and the use of the space. A mechanised scrubber will make light work of heavily soiled floors.
  2. Deal with chemical spills without delay – In addition to being a health and safety risk, chemical spills can be detrimental to coated floors. Tackle these spills with recommended methods and cleaning personnel must always use personal protective equipment.
  3. Deploy mats – Walk-off mats are very effective in preventing dirt and moisture from entering facilities. Place these at key entrances and replace at regular intervals.
  4. Be vigilant about heavy equipment – When heavy equipment such as pallets, machinery or boxes of goods needs to be moved across the floor, take steps to prevent damage. Use mats under items that are to slide across and trolleys, carts and pallet jacks for other items.
  5. Heed manufacturers’ recommendations – Your floor coating supplier can provide you with the manufacturers’ recommendations for brushes, squeegees and cleaning agents for your particular floor coating product.
  6. Use correct chemicals – Only use the recommended cleaning chemicals for your floor coating type and the environment for each floor.
Prevention is always better than cure
Coated floors are, by nature, very durable but they are not 100% fail-proof. If damage does occur, take immediate steps to have the surface repaired to prevent further deterioration.
