Tennant Company and City of Cologne Announce Agreement for the World’s First Lithium-ion Powered Zero Emissions Street Sweeper

Together with AWB Abfallwirtschaftsbetriebe Koeln GmbH & Co. KG, Cologne Provides an Innovative New Way to Make City Cleaning Quieter, Healthier and Greener

MUNICH, Germany, September 14, 2010—Tennant Company (NYSE: TNC), a world leader in designing, manufacturing and marketing solutions that help create a cleaner, safer world, together with AWB Abfallwirtschaftsbetriebe Koeln GmbH & Co. KG, a wholly owned subsidiary of The City of Cologne, Germany, today revealed a significant agreement for the innovative Green Machines 500ze™ at the Premier Industry Event, IFAT 2010. At a special drinks reception held at Tennant’s booth, the parties, supported by the British Consulate in Germany, shared details of the contract which will see the first Lithium-ion powered zero emissions street sweeper arrive in Germany imminently.

During the reception Stephen Lynas, Tennant Product Management Director, together with Herbert Winkelhog, General Manager (AWB) and Wendy Freeman, British Consul General and Head of UK Trade & Investment in Munich, Germany, explained how by working together they are leading the way in bringing environmentally conscious city cleaning to major city centers such as Cologne.

With major targets already published across Germany for the reduction of CO2 emissions, the adoption of electric vehicles and the drive toward the reduction of noise pollution, the addition of the Green Machines® 500ze™ sweeper to the AWB fleet is a key investment for the future.

  • Germany has one of the world’s most ambitious targets for the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 40 percent by 2020 1
  • Germany is aiming to put around one million electric vehicles on its streets by 2020 through its National Electric Mobility Plan 2
  • German greenhouse gas emissions have already fallen by 21 percent compared to 1990 levels and the country is committed to a 40 percent reduction by 2020 with electric vehicles at the heart of this goal 3

The 500ze, the world’s first Lithium-ion powered vacuum street sweeper, heralds a significant step in the drive for reduced carbon emissions and improved air quality and is aimed at city centers and pedestrian areas. Due to its near-silent operating mode and zero emissions, it is perfectly suited to clean in sound-sensitive environments such as schools and hospitals in the early morning or late night. The Lithium-ion batteries allow it to run for a full day working cycle. Benefits of the Green Machines 500ze™ include:

  • Zero exhaust emissions to improve air quality in cities and urban areas
  • Zero CO2 emissions to help address the growing requirement to cut greenhouse gas emissions
  • Significant noise reduction to enable unobtrusive early morning or late night operation. In transit mode, the 500ze is nearly silent.
  • Up to 8 hours of operation on a single charge of its Lithium-ion battery packs
  • Reduces water consumption through the innovative Cloudmaker™ dust control system

The innovative Green Machines 500ze™ has just secured the highly coveted 2010 Ruban d’Honneur UKTI Award for Innovation for its unique capability to provide a powerful but environmentally conscious sweeping option for enclosed or crowded pedestrian areas.

“Today’s announcement continues over 20 years of collaboration between both companies and is a reflection of the commitment of all to realize a cleaner, healthier and quieter future for residents and visitors to this historic city,” said Stephen Lynas, Tennant Product Director.

“Building a more sustainable future for our city is critical,” said Herbert Winkelhog, General Manager, AWB. “We are incredibly proud to be the first city in Germany to implement an even more progressive and environmentally conscious street cleaning operation and are confident residents will appreciate the power of silence during the early morning clean-up.”

"The Green Machines 500ze is an impressive example of environmental innovation and high quality British design and manufacturing," said Wendy Freeman, British Consul General and Head of UK Trade & Investment in Munich, Germany. "We are delighted to hear about Green Machine's/Tennant's success in Germany."

On the Tennant booth, located in Hall C3 stand 423/524, the company will offer further insights as well as an opportunity to get up close and personal with the portfolio and innovations. Experts will also be available to answer questions.
